Growing safe vegetable with low cost on radiation hotspot
JapanEM Shibata Farm | Nasushiobara City, Tochigi
EM Shibata Farm (Mr. Kazuaki Shibata, owner), located in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, grows vegetables with EM, mainly tomatoes, and he has a good reputation for his vegetables. He knows that EM farming will provide longer picking season and keep vegetables fresh longer.
Although Nasushiobara City is 110km away from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, the region was turned out to be one of the “radiation hotspots”. Thus, Mr. Shibata has been using EM for a long period of time not only to grow good quality vegetables, but also to reduce radiation on his housing land and farmland. He succeeded in reducing the radiation level down to one third.
Besides the vegetable farming, Mr. Shibata promotes the benefits of EM (low cost and safety) to people in the northern Tochigi Prefecture. He also teaches them how to use it in everyday life such as for gardening, cleaning/washing and air refreshing in the community. Therefore he is recognized as a great leader in the community.
