Aiming for an ecologically minded town
Okayama, JapanIn Funao Town, the local government and residents are working together to make their lives more sustainable. Kitchen waste is collected from each household and processed into high quality fertilizer using EM Bokashi.
Funao's Specialities
Funao is a town on the west bank of a river in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. In the northern part, specialty products such as muscatel and sweet pea flowers are grown. Aiming to be an ecologically minded city, the city built a composting plant for agricultural residues and food waste using EM in 1995.
Compost Center
At the composting center, they make organic compost from agricultural waste and household food waste using EM to create a clean and comfortable city.
First, EM Bokashi is produced using rice bran and Activated EM・1. EM Bokashi is put into bags to be distributed to each household.

Kitchen Waste Recycled into Pellets
With the distributed EM Bokashi, each household will do the primary treatment in a bucket. Once the bucket is full, it is placed in front of their house to be collected by the composting center.
The collected waste and agricultural residues are placed on a conveyor belt to detect and remove metal objects. Then it is transferred to fermentation tanks to be fermented for one week.
When the fermentation is completed, the compost is pelletized and dried by machine. After packaging, the "Techno Pellets" are ready. Techno-pellets promote plant growth because they contain many effective microorganisms that react effectively with organic matter in the soil. 150 tons of Techno Pellets are produced annually and are used to grow flowers, muscatel, etc. in the city of Funao. Two thirds are sold outside the town and used for home gardening and agriculture.
In Funao Town, EM products play a big role in environmentally friendly approaches in many scenes. At a local elementary school, Activated EM・1 is poured into the swimming pool. "Techno Pellets" are used in local activities such as flower growing by the city's Environmental Health Council. EM workshops, environmental forums, and EM soap making sessions are held regularly. These continuous activities make the city ecological and sustainable.
