EM Sustainable Solution for Flood Recovery

Overview of Flooding Situation

Severe flooding has impacted 19 provinces in Thailand, with northern regions such as Chiang Rai experiencing some of the worst damage in 80 years. The floods have affected thousands of families and forced the evacuation of many residents. In Chiang Rai, parts of the district remain under water, with severe damage to property and infrastructure, including approximately 10,000 buildings and the temporary closure of Chiang Rai International Airport. Local authorities are continuing their relief efforts, focusing on evacuations and long-term recovery programs.

EM Measurements in Chiang Rai

EMRO Asia quickly responded to the flood crisis in Chiang Rai, collaborating with local organizations like Green Doi Lor Community Enterprise, Lanna Dan Sivilai Foundation, and Love Water Love Forest Love Chiang Rai Club. Their efforts aimed to address pollution and hygiene concerns in flood-affected areas. They supplied 2,000 liters of EM・1 across 12 districts and established production and supply centers in three regions to sustain ongoing flood recovery efforts.

In addition, a partnership with Thoeng Technical College, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and the Provincial Waterworks Authority Mae Moh helped produce EM Mudballs. These EM Mudballs, organized by the Lanna Sivilai Foundation and Green Doi Lor Community Enterprise, targeted polluted waters to restore quality in flooded regions.

Local EM leaders along with EMRO Asia also actively trained local communities on the effective use of EM products, ensuring that their application would lead to long-term recovery. EM products were particularly useful in public spaces, where they helped mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases and promote ecosystem recovery.

Expected Outcomes

The application of EM Technology in Chiang Rai is expected to lead to the following outcomes:
- Water quality improvements: The application of Activated EM・1 is expected to result in changes in harmful bacteria levels and clearer water in the treated areas.
- Community engagement: Residents actively participate in recovery efforts through the use of EM products, which is expected to improve hygiene and living conditions, and empower communities with knowledge about sustainable environmental management.
- Long-term recovery support: The application of EM Technology with the participation of local residents will be conducted to assess the impact on water quality and environmental recovery, ensuring long-term benefits beyond the initial relief efforts.
