Overview

Bio technology incubator LLC, our partner in Mongolia, has been involved in several activities to improve soil quality, reducing polluted soil around ger district areas as well as promoting gardening and EM composting according to the national movement, “One billion trees”.

In 2022, Bio technology incubator LLC, carried out the cleanup and disinfection of the garbage dump in Bayanzurkh district and treated outdoor toilets and polluted soil using EM Technology in order to improve environmental hygiene in Darkhan city and Arkhangai province.

Case 1: Cleanup and Disinfection of a Garbage Dumpsite in Bayanzurkh District

Bayanzurkh is a highly populated district in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and as a result, it generates a significant amount of waste.
EM Application

As part of this project, 450 tons of waste were transferred from the 13,000m2 landfill in Bayanzurkh district to the Tsagaan Davaa landfill and leveled. They sterilized and disinfected the landfill by applying Activated EM・1 (AEM) and other biopreparations of beneficial microorganisms.

Case 2: Treatment of Outdoor Toilets and Polluted Soil

Mongolian wooden squat toilets are commonly installed outside of *gers in Mongolia. However, due to the lack of sanitation infrastructure in ger districts, soil and groundwater pollution has become a national problem. As the urban population continues to grow rapidly year after year, the number of toilets in ger areas has increased accordingly.

In 2022, Bio technology incubator LLC treated outdoor toilets and polluted soil using EM Technology in order to improve environmental hygiene in Darkhan city and Arkhangai province. Darkhan is the second-largest city in Mongolia and the capital of Darkhan-Uul province while Arkhangai is an isolated province on the northern slopes of the Khangai mountains.
EM Application

・In Darkhan city, AEM has been used in 2,290 outdoor toilets at a rate of 2-3 L of AEM per toilet in two applications.
AEM was sprayed throughout the contaminated area.

・In Arkhangai province, AEM was also used on 7410 outdoor toilets around the ger and surrounding area.

EM Effects and Results

They took soil samples in the polluted area for microbiological analysis before and after EM application.

In Darkhan city, the contamination levels dropped 10-30 percent after only one application. While in Arkhangai province, the soil samples were found to be free from bacterial contamination. Further, EM application has also worked well in reducing foul odors, so today the residents are very pleased.

*Ger is a circular tent made of a collapsible wooden inner structure covered with woolen felt. Yurts are still used by many people in rural Mongolia as a form of housing.
