Dr. Higa was awarded with “The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon”. 
The Japanese honours system was developed after the Meiji Era to recognize individual achievement and long-term contributions in the fields of research, business, healthcare, social work, state and local government among others.  This is a distinguished order given by the Japanese imperial family.
