Sustainable Waste Solutions at Pobsook Recycle Center

The Pobsook Recycle Center in Thailand reduces community waste through composting, education, and sustainable waste-sorting practices by adopting EM Technology.

Overview

The Pobsook Recycle Center in Pakkret Municipality, Thailand, was founded in 2003 with support from Japan to reduce community waste through composting and waste-sorting education. To solve odor and fly problems, the center adopted EM Technology, using EM Bokashi and Activated EM・1 to improve composting, water treatment, and fertilizer quality. It also provides training for residents, students, officials, and international guests to promote sustainable waste management and environmental awareness.

Challenges

  • Foul odors and fly infestation.
  • Increasing waste volume in the municipality (approx. 350 tons per day overall).
  • High cost of waste disposal without recycling.
  • Space limitations for processing large quantities of organic waste.

EM Application

EM Composting Process
The composting start as follows:

Collection & weighing
-Organic household waste is collected daily from 9:00–11:00 and weighed.
-Mixing with EM Bokashi
Waste is mixed with EM Bokashi (called Pobsook 50).
-The mixture is placed in the composting machine for 24 hours to ferment.

Cooling
-After fermentation, the compost is removed and spread out on a pan to cool down.
-Starter for next batch
One part of the fermented compost is left in the machine to kickstart the next batch.

Drying & Testing
-The compost is dried, packed, and tested for NPK (nutrient content).

Other EM Activities

  • Water Treatment
Producing EM Mudballs to purify nearby waterways
  • EM Soap Production
Making EM Soap for cleaning equipment and floors

Applying Activated EM・1 and EM Mudballs to the nearby canal

The center produces its own EM soap

Effects and Resutls

    • Odor and fly problems have been eliminated, improving working conditions.
    • Fertilizer is distributed monthly to the municipal government and also to other centers, including vocational training centers, human development centers, and foundations for children.
    • Flowers, papayas, bananas, and other crops thrive using EM fertilizers in vocational centers, home gardens, community parks, and farms.
    • Community involvement in waste sorting and recycling has led to reduced municipal waste and lower waste management costs.
    • The center attracts visitors and trainees from across Thailand and overseas, raising awareness of environmental issues.
    • EM Soap enables safe cleaning while improving hygiene.
    • High-quality fertilizer is produced for community gardens, municipal parks, and vocational training centers.
      NPK Analysis:
      -Total Nitrogen: 2.6%
      -Total Phosphorus: 2.3%
      -Total Potassium: 1.52%

The Civil Engineering Department of Pak Kret Municipality used it in the Durian Orchard Conservation Project in Nonthaburi.
