At Pineapple Farm in Costa Rica, they had an issue with harmful insects caused by leftover crop residue after harvest. However, after using EM, the crop residue broke down faster and the incidence of pests was reduced.

Costa Rica is known for being one of the leading producers and exporters of pineapple in the world.
The problem they face is that after the pineapple is harvested, the leftover residue decomposes, leading to an infestation of stable flies , in addition to farmland contaminated by agrochemicals. The conventional way to manage residues is to use herbicides and then burn or put them in the ground.
In three pilot tests, they applied EM・1 or combine EM・1 and chemicals to crop residue.
・T4: 20L of EM・1/ha ×2
・T5: Staricide (triflumuron) + EM・1
・T7: Dimilin + EM・1

Comparing the incidence of flies using chemicals vs EM・1
・EM effect minimized the stable fly infestation
・EM helped breakdown the crop residue faster
・EM reduced agrochemicals use

The residue was infested with larvae of stable fly

The residue reduced than the control area because the good microbes decomposed it, as well as the infestation of stable fly larvae decreased
