Bioremediation in Maharashtra: The Future of Wastewater Management
Maharashtra, IndiaOverview
India, one of the world's fastest-growing economies, faces a major challenge: wastewater management. In the western Indian state of Maharashtra, known for its diverse cultural heritage, bustling cities like Mumbai, and rich history, is estimated that 9,107 million liters of sewage is discharged per day, but the lack of proper treatment has been a problem.
The Bhandup Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is currently undergoing renovation into a sewage treatment plant to solve water pollution problems.

However, construction was estimated to take four years. During this period, thousands of flamingos migrate to Bhandup, making their protection a major concern. To address this environmental challenge as soon as possible, EM Technology was chosen for this project.
EM Application
The Bhandup Wastewater Treatment Plant is a large facility with an installed treatment capacity of 216 million liters per day. It comprises four lagoons, each measuring 231 meters in length, 157 meters in width, and 4 meters in depth.
Since January 3rd, 2023, Maple Orgtech India Limited has been treating wastewater there applying Maple EM・1 EFFLUCLEAN plus (EMEp)*(1) in two lagoons out of four.
Before the EM Application, the water had foul odors, and ammonia gas was being generated at the bottom of the pond.

Effects and Results
After 3 months, a visible difference could be seen between the inlet and outlet water, along with improvements in the parameters specified by the authority.
Since the 70th day of the EM application, BOD levels have been less than 10 mg/L, COD less than 50 mg/L, and TSS less than 20 mg/L, successfully meeting the strict tender conditions given by the BMC.
