It has been more than 25 years since Dr. Teruo Higa developed EM in 1982.
Today, EM is manufactured by EM Laboratory Co., Ltd in Shizuoka and EM Research Organization Inc. in Okinawa.
EM was first used for soil improver and later was applied into various fields such as animal husbandry, aquaculture, waste management, water treatment, household use and etc. Recently, the activity by local volunteer groups to clean rivers and the coastline with activated EM and EM mudball has been conducted in several regions of Japan. Also, cleaning swimming pools with activated EM is very popular as a part of the environmental education curriculum for students at elementary and junior high schools.
